Climate Justice Program Assistant

About the Position

This position is within the Alaska Climate Justice Program and will work closely with the entire Program team, but will report directly to and work most closely with the Program Director. The successful candidate plays a critical role to help coordinate AIJ’s work to forge meaningful relationships with Alaska Native communities and advocate for climate justice. The successful candidate will help coordinate the administrative work of a small team of AIJ staff working with Tribal communities to elevate Alaska Native voices and priorities. The Climate Justice Program involves community-based environmental monitoring of permafrost thaw, erosion, and flooding, climate justice policy advocacy, communicating and elevating Indigenous voices, and connecting Tribal communities with government resources and funding. This is an excellent role for a person who is passionate about justice, equity, and decolonizing the systems that are responsible for climate change and disproportionate effects in remote Alaska. Work responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating culturally-appropriate community meetings, workshops, trainings, and other events with partnering Alaska Native communities and other entities. This aspect of the position will include coordinating event logistics and arranging travel with an external travel agent as well as gathering, compiling, storing, and communicating travel needs/itinerary requests.
  • Communicating within the team to set meetings and meeting agendas, taking and sharing meeting notes, and communicating with Tribal partners, other partner organizations, and state and federal government representatives.
  • Communicating to the public via website updates, newsletters, social media, and reports; sometimes in partnership with external contracted agencies.
  • Tracking and managing invoices, payments, receipts, and grant reports and required for program grant funding.
  • Conducting research and assisting with writing, editing, and formatting reports.
  • Producing visually attractive project information and summaries. Developing presentations with Alaska Native communities to document environmental change and climate adaptation work.
  • Social media launch and coordination, liaising between the Climate Justice Program team and the AIJ Communications Director.
  • Other administrative, mailing, research, and coordination duties as assigned.

Position Required Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in communications, ethnic studies, environmental studies, or other related subjects. Equivalent combination of education and/or working experience will be considered, including experience working with Alaska Native communities.
  • Cultural competency, experience, and/or understanding of Alaska Native cultures, traditions, tribal governments, and issues.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom, and some familiarity with social media.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work independently, collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to challenges.
  • Highly organized, attentive to detail, and results-oriented.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality for sensitive information.

Development and Communications Director

About this Position: This is a full-time exempt position based in Anchorage, Alaska. The Development and Communications Director will work to advance AIJ’s mission and help generate resources to support the agency’s programs and financial goals by developing and implementing internal and external agency communications, fundraising, donor stewardship, marketing and public relations strategies.  

QUALIFICATIONS

 Personal: The individual for this position must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, self-confidence and be able to champion AIJ’s mission and programs to diverse audiences. The person must be dependable, be able to work with a team of co-workers in stressful situations and to work with people from diverse cultures whose first language is not English. Be a creative thinker and have the ability to strategize and create 

 Education/Experience: B.A or higher in Communications or Nonprofit Management (or related fields). The ideal candidate must have experience running effective communication strategies and fundraising activities, have expert social media, and effective content creation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills and work experience with culturally diverse clients. Previous work experience with non-profit is preferred.

 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop communications and marketing strategy plan for the organization and its programs
  • Develop fundraising plan and strategy including but not limited to seeking out and leading fundraising opportunities that align with AIJ’s financial goals and values
  • Create interesting, relevant and appropriate content for social media, newsletters, etc.  Content creation includes development and management of multimedia assets
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and media representatives
  • Elevate brand recognition and grow and strengthen AIJ’s network of partners and supporters
  • Foster relationships with major donors, foundations, and prospects
  • Manage social media accounts and keep up to date with platforms and technologies that will help further communications strategies

Climate Justice Tribal Liaison Coordinator

About the Position

The successful candidate plays a critical role to forge meaningful, sustainable relationships with Alaska Native communities and to advocate for climate justice. The successful candidate will work with tribal communities to elevate Alaska Native voices, values, and priorities through community-based environmental monitoring of permafrost thaw and flooding and development of climate justice policy. This is an excellent role for a person who is passionate about justice, equity and decolonizing the systems that are responsible for the climate crisis.

This position has both external and internal-facing leadership responsibilities. Externally, the successful candidate will work as liaison to Alaska Native communities and state and federal government agencies. Internally, the candidate will work with Alaska Native communities on implementing community-based environmental monitoring and co-developing climate justice advocacy strategies with Alaska Native communities.

Position Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in ethnic studies, Alaska Native studies, Alaska Native governance, environmental studies, social psychology, or a related field that includes coursework and/or experience communicating and working with Alaska Native communities

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Strong knowledge of Alaska Native policy, cultures, histories and government relations, including concepts of sovereignty and self-determination.

Minimum two years of experience working with Alaska Native communities.

Ability to communicate across cultural lines to include interpretation of policy between tribal, federal and Alaska state governments.

Able to work independently, collaboratively and creatively to find solutions to challenges.

Experience and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Strong interest in coordinating policy activities with Arctic Indigenous peoples.

Facilitate meetings with Alaska Native communities.

Previous work experience with non-profit legal services program and minimum two years legal experience is preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings.

  1. Provide legal services including Family-based Immigration; Applications for Lawful Permanent Residence; Naturalization/Citizenship; Temporary Protected Status (TPS); Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); Asylum; Children and Youth; and Removal/deportation defense.
  2. Conduct client interviews and review supporting documentation.
  3. Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and immigration authorities both verbally and in writing.
  4. Create partnerships with community organizations serving Alaska’s immigrant populations.
  5. Conduct educational events, such as Know Your Rights presentations.

  • Have an understanding or desire to learn about domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking and the legal and language access needs for underserved immigrant and limited English proficient Alaskans.
  • Familiar with the non-profit community ecosystem in Alaska and a demonstrated history of partnering with other entities to either develop grant proposals or implement projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and a minimum of five years’ experience with grant writing in non-profit or other settings, or transferable work experience.
  • Experience in writing and managing federal or state grants required.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Ability to manage competing demands, establish priorities and meet all deadlines.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grant Writing and Management

  • Lead role in working with other AIJ management level staff on grant development and management to build agency capacity and sustainability including grant writing and submission of grants for local, state and federal funding opportunities. Grant management duties include review of grant solicitations and request for proposals. Lead role with preparing grant application materials for submission. Work with grant subawards and managing all aspects of grant programmatic and financial requirements.
  • Monitor subawards and work with community partners to secure grants.
  • Grant writing includes overall responsibility for the development of proposal abstracts, letters of intent, summary data sheet, proposal narratives with purpose of the proposal, what will be done and who will implement the proposal. Development of budget worksheets and budget narratives. Development of all required grant attachments working with AIJ’s senior management staff.
  • Development of grant opportunities through outreach, networking and partnerships with community agencies on grant applications.
  • Maintaining grant files for audit including completing and maintaining documentation for award conditions and completing grant set up, budget approval, progress report submission and approval, financial report submission and approval including close-out procedures in JustGrants.
  • Primary grant administrator with JustGrants system in submitting grant applications and managing existing grants. Oversee grant deliverables and meeting all programmatic and fiscal reporting requirements.
  • Set priorities and monitor grant submission deadlines.
